Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- Members of the Brandon Wheat Kings will be busy this week when they return from a 3-game in three night Western Hockey League road trip.

Following Sunday night's game against the League leading Hitmen in Calgary, the Wheat Kings will return home to Brandon to prepare for next weekend's games against the Broncos in Swift Current and the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers on Saturday.

In addition to regular practices throughout the week, the Wheat Kings will be busy off the ice as well. Not only will they be visiting area schools as part of this year's Christmas School Teddy Bear Toss promotion, they will be hosting December's School Patrol Luncheon, this month's Minor Hockey Caravan as well as another CIBC Read to Succeed visit.

Hartney product Del Cowan will be one of three Wheat Kings travelling out to Souris Tuesday night as Brandon Source for Sports and Coca Cola present this month's Minor Hockey Caravan. Cowan, Brodie Melnychuk and Andrew Hayes will be skating alongside the Novice, Atoms and Squirts at the Murray Arena. As well, they will be signing autographs and distributing complimentary tickets, compliments of the program's two sponsors.

Wednesday will see Matt Lowry, Darren Bestland, Chad Erb and Jay Fehr serving breakfast at a special Fundraising event at Earl Oxford School from 7-9 a.m. The purpose of the breakfast is to raise money for a family, whose children attend Earl Oxford. One of their daughters has been diagnosed with Baton's Disease, which will require expensive treatments in China.

Later that day, veterans Cale Jefferies and Colby Robak will be serving lunch, compliments of Subway, to the School Patrol unit at Betty Gibson School. As well, the patrollers will receive complimentary tickets to an upcoming game, courtesy of The Brandon Sun and Manitoba Public Insurance.

A busy week will conclude Thursday with captain Keith Aulie expected to visit Elkhorn School for the first Read to Succeed visit of the month. The 19-year old Calgary Flames' draft choice will be reading to the students, answering questions as well as handing out tickets, compliments of CIBC, for a Brandon home game in the new year.

Back to the ice, it was Aulie who picked an opportune time to score his first goal of the season Saturday night in Medicine Hat. The goal, with only 12 seocnds remaining in regulation time, lifted Brandon to a dramatic 3-2 victory over the second place Tigers in Medicine Hat. The victory improved Brandon's record to 15-10-1-1 on the season and evened their record to 1-1 on this weekend's 3-game road trip. Jay Fehr was chosen the game's first star as he scored twice and then set up the game winner for the Wheat Kings, who outshot the Tigers 32-21.

Tickets to Brandon's next home game - Saturday's Westoba Credit Union Kids Loonie Scramble Night against Medicine Hat - are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca
