Cedar Rapids RoughRiders News Release
Cedar Rapids, Iowa- Kyle Flanagan piled up four points as the host RoughRiders wiped out the Des Moines Buccaneers 9-2 Saturday night.
The RoughRiders signaled early on that the Buccaneers might be in for a long night as Jeff Costello scored the opening goal from close range just 51 seconds into the game. Flanagan picked the first of his three first period assists on the opener.
The Bucs would bounce back to even the score at one while on the power play when Rocco Carzo jammed the puck in from the side of the net at 12:19 of the first period but would have little enough to cheer about from that point on as the Riders broke loose for six straight goals.
It was the Riders who were on the power play when Paul Phillips' blue line blast started the Cedar Rapids onslaught at 14:47 of the first. Just under three minutes later Darren Rowe extended the lead to 3-1 with another long range drive.
At 7:22 of the second period Nick Oddo's one timer made it 4-1 and chased Des Moines starting goaltender Fredrik Bergman from the game.
Relief netminder Aaron Crandall fared little better. Crandall was beaten for the first time at 9:20 of the second when Mike Seidel's shot was deflected home.
The Riders pushed the lead to 7-1 by scoring a pair of goals just 17 seconds apart early in the third period. Flanagan buried a centering pass from Scott Winkler at 3:40; at 3:57 Ben Lynch buried a rebound.
The Bucs finally halted the Rider run when Jacob Youso scored from a bad angle at 11:24 of the third period.
The Riders would finish with a flourish, however. Cedar Rapids was on the power play when Winkler rifled in a Derek Johnson feed in from the slot to make it 8-2 at 16:34 of the third. Just 54 seconds later Robin Bergman scored from the doorstep to cap off the win.
