APPLEBEE'S PARK (Lexington, KY) -- The Lexington Legends announced today that Wilmore Elementary School in Wilmore, Kentucky is the 2008 Hit-the-Books program winner. Wilmore Elementary had the highest percentage of students out to their designated Legends game this year.
The winning school will receive a free lunch provided by Chick-Fil-A.
The Hit-the-Books program is a joint effort between the Lexington Legends and Chick-Fil-A to reach out to the Central Kentucky school system and encourage students to read. As the program goes, students at participating schools each receive a bookmark. For every book the student reads, the teacher initials a base. When the student has all three bases and home plate initialed by the teacher, he/she may bring the bookmark to the Legends box office to exchange it for two tickets to a specified Legends home game.
The Legends are now beginning its 2009 Hit-the-Books program, which begins with a bookmark drawing contest this month. This is the ninth year that the Lexington Legends have sponsored the Hit-the-Books program. Over 80,000 Central Kentucky school children have participated in the reading program since its inception.
