Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
TROY, N.Y. - The Tri-City ValleyCats, Class A affiliate of the Houston Astros, have been awarded the New York-Penn League's John H. Johnson President's Trophy. The award is bestowed annually to a club exemplifying the standards of a complete baseball franchise. The league honor nominates the ValleyCats organization for the overall Minor League Baseball Johnson Trophy, which will be named at the Baseball Winter Meetings in December.
"It is extremely gratifying to be named the recipient of the John H. Johnson President's Trophy," said ValleyCats Vice President/General Manager Rick Murphy. "Hosting the New York-Penn League All-Star Game provided the organization an opportunity to not only showcase our excellent facility, but the ValleyCats operation to our fans and peers. The award exemplifies the efforts of our entire front office for providing a fun-filled, affordable, family entertainment atmosphere for each fan that walks into the ballpark."
The Tri-City ValleyCats set a new single-season attendance record in 2008, having attracted 140,631 fans through the gates of Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. In 35 home openings, the ValleyCats averaged 4,018 people per game, also an organizational benchmark. The season marked the fifth consecutive year in which the ValleyCats broke the organization's record. This new record consisted of nine sell-out crowds and was highlighted by the 6,630 fans that packed "The Joe" the Fourth of July.
Highlighting the 2008 season for the ValleyCats organization was the fourth-ever New York-Penn League All-Star Game held at "The Joe" on August 19. A sell-out crowd of 6,149 filled the ballpark for an evening of outstanding baseball talent and the ValleyCats signature promotions. The All-Star festivities also consisted of a downtown Troy All-Star Fan Fest with a free concert by Eddie Money and an All-Star Luncheon with a keynote speech by Hall-of-Famer Goose Gossage.
ValleyCats Vice President/General Manager Rick Murphy was also honored by the league, winning the League Executive of the Year Award for outstanding contribution to the ValleyCats, the New York-Penn League and the sport of baseball.
The ValleyCats will now compete with a representative from each of the fourteen Minor Leagues for the National John H. Johnson President's Trophy. The recipient will be honored at the Baseball Winter Meetings in Las Vegas, Nevada in December.
