Bloomington PrairieThunder News Release
Veteran broadcaster Greg Halbleib is adding another line to his resume.
Bloomington PrairieThunder officials announced Thursday that Halbleib will handle the radio play-play duties for the 2008-09 International Hockey League season. All PrairieThunder games air on Radio Bloomington's WTRX (93.7 FM).
Halbleib has been in the sports broadcasting business for 29 years. He began his career at WZOE in Princeton before moving to Radio Bloomington eight years ago. He currently serves as sports director, overseeing and organizing all local professional, college and high school sports broadcasts.
He is in his second season as the play-by-play voice of Illinois State University volleyball after serving as the 'Voice of ISU Football' for four seasons. In addition, Halbleib has been the lead television broadcaster for volleyball for the Missouri Valley Conference the past 14 years.
Halbleib, who has been the only play-by-play broadcaster for the Bloomington Extreme indoor football team during its three-year existence, has been the recipient of seven Silver Dome Awards from the Illinois Broadcasters Association.
Six times he was named the best play-play broadcaster by the IBA and twice he has been named the United Indoor Football League's top play-by-play broadcaster.
"I'm really looking forward to getting behind the microphone with the PrairieThunder," said Halbleib. "It will be my first experience broadcasting hockey, but I love the game and I feel my broadcast style will fit nicely.
"I know how fast the pace of hockey is, but I'm accustomed to that kind of pace after broadcasting volleyball for the past 25 years. I'm excited about the team and I hope I can translate that excitement to the fans."
Halbleib replaces Ed Hammond, who handled the play-by-play duties the first two years but decided not to return on a full-time basis because of his work commitment in Peoria. Hammond will substitute for Halbleib on a few occasions this season.
"We are excited to have Greg join the PrairieThunder this season," said team general manager Jerry McBurney. "We are well aware of his high-level of talent through his work at WJBC and with the Bloomington Extreme.
"Greg has been a fixture on the sports scene in Bloomington-Normal and in Central Illinois for several years. We believe his broadcast style will fit nicely in the hockey arena."
