Buccaneers rename arena "Buccaneer Arena"

DES MOINES,  IA  -The Des Moines Buccaneers  announced  today  that  they have  renamed  the home of  the Des  Moines Buccaneers to Buccaneer Arena. The Arena located at 72nd  & Hickman in Urbandale has been home to the  Buccaneers since 1980 and has been the site of many hockey and non‐hockey events over the past 50 years.   

Voted the "Best Indoor Sporting Event" in Des Moines by Cityview readers for 2008, Buccaneer Arena is getting a  face‐lift  as  well  as  upgrades  inside  the  Arena.  New  for  the  2008‐09  season,  fans  will  see  newly  remodeled  restrooms on the  lower concourse and the team will enjoy a remodeled  locker room. Future plans for the Arena  include  an  expansion  to  the  South  end  of  the  Arena  for  new  offices  including  a  facelift  to  the  exterior  of  the  building.   

The Arena has been the site of four Buccaneer Anderson Cup Championships and four Clark Cup Championships as  well as four Tier 1 National Championships. The Arena has been the only home of the Des Moines Buccaneers and  is widely known as the "most intimidating venue for visiting teams in the USHL." The Arena has also been the site  of many non‐hockey events such as rodeos, concerts, boxing events, and mixed martial arts events.   

In 1979, Herb Brooks, who coached the U.S. hockey team to the "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviet Union at  the  1980 Olympics, brought his Olympic  team  to Des Moines  and what's now  known  as Buccaneer Arena.  The  team played an exhibition game against the St. Louis Blues prior to traveling to Lake Placid, New York where they  ultimately won the gold medal.   

The  Buccaneers  open  regular  season  play  this  Saturday  night  at  7  PM when  they  host  the  Tri‐City  Storm.  The  Buccaneers  are  coming  off  a  4‐1  preseason  that  saw  them  go  undefeated  in  the  "Fall  Classic"  in  Sioux  City  (formerly known as the Buc Bowl). Fans will be treated to pre‐game tail‐gate party  in the South Lot of Buccaneer  Arena Saturday beginning at 5 PM. There will be free beer samples and games for fans with game tickets.
