SAINT JOHN, NB --- At a press conference held at City Hall this morning, the Saint John Sea Dogs and the Saint John Police Force announced that the two organizations will be partnering to run this year's DARE Program, which will be administered in classrooms throughout the city over the course of an upcoming ten-week period.

Members of the Sea Dogs will join police officers in their school visits and also participate in several community centre ball hockey games that encourage young people to lead a healthy lifestyle. Complimentary tickets to Sea Dogs home games will also be made available to DARE Program participants.

"This partnership with Sea Dogs is a positive and wonderful opportunity that will greatly assist the Saint John Police Force in the delivery of Drug Abuse Resistance Education, which will teach our youth effective ways to resist drugs and violence by teaching them the personal skills and techniques necessary to deal with peer pressure and other influences," said Saint John Police Force Deputy Chief Bill Reid.

The Saint John Police Force has managed the DARE program in the city for the past ten years, helping elementary and middle school students enhance their self esteem, seek positive alternatives to substance abuse, improve their interpersonal and communications skills, and enhance their decision-making abilities. Team President Wayne Long is extremely pleased that the Sea Dogs will be a part of the DARE Program this year.

"Our franchise has always been about being a quality organization both on and off the ice," said Long. "Giving back to the community has always been a major priority, and this partnership is definitely a step in the right direction for us. We want to be known nationwide as a franchise that makes a difference in peoples' lives, and being a part of the DARE program and working with the Saint John Police Force is an excellent opportunity for us to continue to build our relationship with the great city of Saint John."

The DARE Program will begin appearing at schools throughout Saint John in October.
