Chesapeake Baysox News Release
(AKRON, OH) - Travis Hafner homered and drove in three runs and Frank Herrmann allowed one run over seven sterling innings as the Aeros beat the Baysox 5-1 Saturday. With the win, the Aeros will head to Trenton to take on the Thunder in the Eastern League Championship.
After retiring the first two batters in the bottom of the first inning, Baysox starter Chris Tillman walked Matt LaPorta. Travis Hafner followed the walk with a two run homer to right field, putting Akron up 2-0.
Akron struck again with another pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. Tillman walked Brandon Chaves to lead off the inning and Josh Rodriguez followed with a single to right. Bronson Sardinha attempted to bunt, but Tillman fielded the ball and threw to third to retire Chaves for the first out. Matt LaPorta came up with runners on first and second with one out and hit a ball back up the middle. The ball hit Tillman and LaPorta was credited with an infield single. Tillman would have to leave the game, he would be relieved by Ryan Keefer.
Now with the bases loaded, Keefer hit Hafner with a pitch to force in a run, putting Akron up 3-0. Keefer then threw a wild pitch with Wes Hodges batting, allowing Sardinha to score. Keefer kept the inning from getting any worse by striking out Hodges and Stephen Head to end the inning. Keefer would allow one more run in the bottom of the fifth on a solo homerun by Matt LaPorta.
Bowie finally got on the board in the top of the seventh inning. Carlos Rojas led off with a double to left and went to third on a groundout by Nolan Reimold. Matt Wieters drove Rojas in with a groundout to second.
Akron brought out closer Randy Newsom to protect a four run lead in the top of the ninth inning. Newsom retired Jonathan Tucker and Carlos Rojas to open the inning before hitting Nolan Reimold with a pitch. Matt Wieters followed with a walk to put runners on first and second with two outs, but Newsom got Jeff Nettles to fly out to right field to end the game.
Bowie managed just three hits in the game and hit into a pair of double plays. Chris Tillman was charged with the loss, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks in 2.1 innings.
