Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Carlos Peralta won his team-high fifth game and Marcus Jones went 4-for-5 as the Vermont Lake Monsters won their fifth straight home game with a 6-3 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at historic Centennial Field.
Peralta (5-0) thossed three innings of relief for the win, allowing just one run on a Michael Diaz solo home run in the top of the sixth that gave the ValleyCats a 3-2 lead. Vermont answered right back in the bottom of the inning with RBI singles from Stephen Englund and Michael Guerrero to give the Lake Monsters a 4-3 lead.
Vermont took an early 2-0 lead in the game as Derek Norris led off the bottom of the second with his 10th home run of the season and Dmitri Young had a line drive RBI single to center field in the third. The home run for Norris tied him with Luke Montz for third-place on Vermont's single-season home run list, while Young went 1-for-3 and is now 4-for-10 in his four games with the Lake Monsters on a rehab assignment.
The ValleyCats tied the game with two runs in the fourth inning off Vermont starter Jack McGeary, who was making his first appearance of the season for the Lake Monsters. Diaz led off the inning with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly, while Jason Castro added an RBI single later in the inning. McGeary allowed two runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts in his four innings.
After Vermont took the 4-3 lead in the sixth, the Lake Monsters added insurance runs in the seventh on a bases loaded walk to Steve Souza and a Jake Smolinski RBI force out in the eighth. Smolinski was 0-for-4 on the night to snap his 12-game hitting streak.
Jack Shuck went 3-for-5 for Tri-City (27-45), while reliever Antonio Noguera allowed two runs in 1 1/3 innings for the loss. 17-year-old ValleyCat starter Jordan Lyles, who had walked seven batters in an 1 1/3 against the Lake Monsters last Saturday at Tri-City, allowed two runs on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts in four innings on Thursday. Austin Garrett struckout three over the final two scoreless innings for his third save of the year.
Vermont (33-40) has won five of its last six and nine of its last 14 overall to move seven games under .500 for the first time since they were 23-30. The Lake Monsters have won the first two games of the current homestand after sweeping a three-game series from Hudson Valley August 24-26 to end their last homestand to improve to 17-18 on the season at home.
The Lake Monsters will need to sweep the Oneonta Tigers in the final two-game home series of the season, Friday night at 7:05 pm and Saturday night beginning at 6:05 pm, to finish the year with an above .500 record at Centennial .
