Louisville Bats News Release
Louisville, KY - The Louisville Bats fell behind 3-0 early and had to come from behind to defeat the Indianapolis Indians 6-4. The comeback allowed Adam Pettyjohn to pick up his 15th win of the season and tie a franchise record for most wins by a Louisville pitcher in a season. The Bats had 10, 517 fans in attendance watching the team earn their 23rd victory in August, a total that sets a franchise record for most wins in any month by a Louisville team.
Pettyjohn's victory did not come easy as Indianapolis struck first in the second inning when Brian Bixler had a RBI single to put the Tribe in front 1-0. Andrew McCutchen helped the Indians go up 2-0 with a RBI single to left field in the third. In the fourth, Chris Duffy increased the Indians lead to 3-0 when he laced a RBI double to right-center to bring Bixler across the plate.
In the bottom of the fourth frame, with two outs a Drew Anderson RBI double into centerfield put the Bats on the board to make it a 3-1 game in favor of Indianapolis.
Anderson notched up another RBI in the bottom of the sixth, and pulled Louisville within one run with a solo homer that landed onto the Overlook Grill picnic tables.
In the seventh, Indianapolis saw their lead vanish as Louisville stormed out in front 5-3. Kevin Barker hit a three-run homer to left-center to give the Bats their first lead of the game. The homer puts Barker in sole possession of extra base hits (150) in Louisville franchise history, passing Brandon Larson. Barker is also just three homers from tying Larson's all-time home run record with 70 long balls.
With Bixler at the plate, Bats reliever Justin Lehr threw a wild pitch allowing Ronny Paulino to score to make it a 5-4 contest in favor of Louisville.
Mackowiak scored on an error by Bixler to put the Bats back up two runs with a 6-4 lead that they would not relinquish.
Jon Adkins pitched came in the ninth to secure Pettyjohn's historic victory. Adkins also picked up his league leading 30th save of the season, and is now just one save from tying Mike Perez's all-time record with 31 saves in a season, set in 1990.
Pettyjohn (15-6, 4.59) gave up seven hits and three runs while striking out two batters in 7.0 innings of work in the win.
Indians reliever Romulo Sanchez (5-1, 3.46) picked up the loss while allowing two hits and three runs in one inning.
Louisville will finish the 2008 regular season Monday afternoon on Labor Day with a start time of 1:05 p.m. The Bats will start lefty Bobby Livingston (4-3, 4.63) while the Indians starting pitcher is to be determined.
