Training Camp Day Two On the Ice

(Windsor) The Windsor Spitfires took to the ice again for day two of practices and intra-squad scrimmages. Spitfire hopefuls were looking to make their mark and impress the team's hockey operations staff.

Team Blue took the ice for a 9 a.m practice before Team White and Team Red faced off in the first scrimmage of the day at 10:15 a.m, in which both squads played two 30-minute halves. Both teams were looking for their first win of the camp and Eric Wellwood of Team White opened the scoring at the 1:38 mark of the first period. Team Red quickly responded 54 seconds later at 2:31 of the first period on a goal by Conor O'Donnell to tie things up at 1-1 before and Team White took back the lead 45 seconds later on Adam Henrique's third goal of the camp. Eric Wellwood scored his second goal of the period at the 6:53 mark to give Team White a 3-1 lead before Team Red answered with goals from Austin Watson and Ryan Ellis at 19:31 and 24:50 of the first period respectively to tie the game at three goals apiece heading into halftime. Lane Floro stopped 11 of 14 shots for Team White while Andrew Engelage turned 14 of 17 shots aside for Team Red.

In the second period, Adam Henrique scored his second goal of the game to give Team White its third lead of the game at 4-3. Nik Dobrich added some insurance for Team White, scoring at the 21:07 mark to give Team White a 5-3 lead. Richard Greenop tried to bring Team Red back, netting a goal with 1:45 left in the game but Eric Wellwood sealed Red's fate, scoring his third goal of the game into an empty net to give Team White a 6-4 victory over Team Red. Ryan Wadden stopped 8 of the 10 shots he faced in the second frame but Steve Gleeson proved to be the difference for Team White in the second period as he stopped 20 of 21 shots in White's victory.

Team Blue finished the exhibition round-robin with a perfect 2-0 record while Team White improved to 1-1 with today's win. Team Red ended the camp winless in two attempts.

The second practice of the day was conducted at 3 p.m this past afternoon, before the day's last scrimmage kicked off at 4:15 p.m. This scrimmage featured newly formed teams as decided by the Spitfires coaching staff following the morning session. Team White and Team Blue took to the ice to play the final game of the day and White took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Justin Shugg at the 4:31 mark of the first period. Team Blue's Ryan Carlisle stopped a penalty shot by Ryan Soucie almost four minutes later before Tyson Isaac of Blue scored at 18:48 mark to tie things at one goal apiece. Team Blue then took a 2-1 lead on a Christopher Hughes goal at 24:23 of the first stanza before Team White responded with two goals of their own, coming from Justin Buzzeo at 25:35 and Ben Dubois at 28:52 to give White a 3-2 lead into the break. Lane Floro stopped 12 of 14 shots for Team White while Ryan Carlisle made 20 of 23 saves for Team Blue.

Team White extended their lead to 5-2 as Eric Wellwood and Mitchell Fox scored goals at 6:08 and 7:20 of the second period respectively. Team Blue started their comeback bid with Tyson Isaac's second goal of the game coming by way of a penalty shot against Team White goaltender Steve Gleeson at the 14:20 mark of the second period to make it a 5-3 contest. But Team White would not relinquish their lead and Eric Wellwood added his second goal of the game which proved to be the final tally of the game into an empty net with 30 seconds left in the contest as Team White won 6-3.

Tomorrow will be the final day of training camp and selected players will participate in two morning skates before Spits fans are encouraged to follow the team to Tecumseh Arena for the Windsor Spitfires Annual Blue-White Game at 7 pm. Admission is $5 per person, with one dollar of the proceeds being provided to the Windsor Spitfires Foundation.
