Springfield Cardinals News Release
The San Antonio Missions grabbed the opening game of the three-game series, knocking off the Springfield Cardinals by a score of 6-2 on Wednesday night at Hammons Field.
The Cardinals missed out on an opportunity to pick up a game on Northwest Arkansas, who got beat in Midland earlier in the evening.
San Antonio capitalized on three Springfield errors, scoring three unearned runs against Cards' pitching.
The Missions were by no means flawless themselves, committing four errors, issuing eight walks and throwing four wild pitches.
Missions' starter Matt Buschmann (8-6) was wild, issuing five walks and throwing three wild pitches. His wild pitch in the third allowed Allen Craig to score, giving the Cardinals the lead at 1-0.
San Antonio got even in the fourth inning against Brandon Dickson, as Kyle Blanks scored on an RBI single by Beamer Weems, tying the game at 1-1.
The Mission got to Dickson (1-1) for three runs (two earned) in the fifth, taking the lead for good at 4-1. A throwing error allowed two more runs to score in the sixth, as San Antonio took a commanding advantage of 6-1.
Springfield made a run at it in the ninth, as Brandon Dickson got the rally going with his fourth hit of the night, a one-out single off of Missions' reliever Mauro Zarate. Daryl Jones and Jose Martinez followed with consecutive singles, with Buckman scoring on the Martinez hit to make it 6-2. Reliever Gabe DeHoyos was brought into the game and immediately walked Brandon Yarbrough, loading the bases. DeHoyos recovered to strike out pinch-hitter Casey Rowlett and then got Jim Rapoport swinging to end it, recording his fourth save of the year.
Springfield (27-24) remains five games back of Northwest Arkansas in the North Division. Brad Furnish (0-0) will make his Double-A debut for Springfield on Thursday night, taking on San Antonio's Stephen Faris (7-5). Game time on Thursday is 7:10pm and gates to Hammons Field open at 6:10pm. Tickets are available for all home games at Hammons Field by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that Adam Wainwright will continue his rehab assignment with the Springfield Cardinals, as he's scheduled to start for Springfield this Saturday night at Hammons Field, as the Cardinals host the Corpus Christi Hooks.
Wainwright, who hasn't pitched for St. Louis since June 7th, is anticipated to throw between 50 and 60 pitches. An integral part of St. Louis' World Series Championship in 2006, the right-hander has been on the Disabled List for two months with a sprained right middle finger. Wainwright has made two rehab appearances so far, pitching for Triple-A Memphis this past week.
Tickets are available for Saturday's game by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com. Saturday night will also feature St. John's Cardinals' T-Shirt Giveaway, as 2,500 fans will receive an Athletic Gray Cardinals' T-Shirt, thanks to St. John's Sports Medicine. Gates open at 5:10pm and game time is 6:10pm.
