Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Rancho Cucamonga, CA- Dominant pitching from starter Alexander Torres and a five run fifth inning powered the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes to an 8-4 victory over the Lancaster JetHawks on Sunday at the Epicenter, ending Rancho's six game losing streak.

For the first two games of the series Lancaster never trailed, but that would change early Sunday as the Quakes took a 1-0 first inning lead. After Ryan Mount and Hank Conger reached on back-to-back singles against Lancaster starter Chris Jones (5-8), Mike Napoli flew out to right field scoring Mount.

In the fourth inning Rancho added a run on a solo home run by Efren Navarro, his first with the Quakes, to take a 2-0 lead. Navarro finished the game 3-for-4 with a RBI.

Rancho broke out the bats in the fifth inning scoring five runs on five hits against Jones. After back-to-back singles by Larry Infante and Anthony Norman, Peter Bourjos brought home Infante with a sacrifice fly to center field. Hank Conger then cleared the bases with a two-run single and Napoli followed with a two-run homer to center giving the Quakes a 7-0 lead. Napoli went 2-for-2 on the night.

After overpowering JetHawks hitters for five innings, Torres labored a bit in the sixth giving up two runs before leaving the game with a 7-2 lead. Jason Place reached base on a double, went to third on a single by Yamaico Navarro, then scored on an error when Torres threw the ball away trying to pick off a runner at first base. Lancaster added its second run of the inning on a RBI single by Mike Jones. Torres (2-1) went 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out 12 Lancaster batters which is a season high for a Quakes starting pitcher. At one point Torres struck out the side in three consecutive innings.

Lancaster put together a two-out rally in the seventh inning scoring twice and narrowing the Quakes lead to 7-4. After Place walked and Navarro singled, his 11th hit of the series, Daniel Nava came through with a two-run double chasing reliever AJ Ford from the game.

The Quakes added an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI groundout by Infante to push the lead to 8-4.

Bobby Cassevah and David Herndon pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to close out the win for Torres.

Rancho sends Michael Anton (3-4, 6.04 ERA) to the mound on Tuesday against Inland Empire's Victor Garrate (0-0, 4.76 ERA) in game one of the three-game series. Game time is scheduled for 7:05pm.
