Avs win series with split

Woodbridge, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, rode a sharp outing from Corey Bass in game two of a doubleheader Monday night to win its series with the Potomac Nationals. Salem (6-12) took the series from Potomac (11-7) with a 6-1 game two victory while Potomac won the opener 1-0.

Salem snared the lead early in the first inning as Mark Ori clobbered a 2-0 pitch from Jhonny Nunez over the left-field wall for a 1-0 lead. It was Ori's sixth homer of the year and his sixth of the season.

Potomac tied the game in the bottom of the inning only to have Salem take the lead for good with two out. As Tim Torres stood at second, Kevin Carkeek singled to center, scoring Torres for a 2-1 lead. Salem then pushed the lead to three in the third as Ori and Jimmy Van Ostrand paired RBI singles.

In the game, Corey Bass notched his third win of the season with a five inning outing in which he allowed just one run on six hits. Meantime, Kevin Carkeek tied a career high with a three-hit night.

Game one saw just one run come across as the game's starters, Zach Segovia and Douglas Arguello, allowed just one run on six hits in 11 innings and two-thirds. The lone run came across on a wild pitch in the second inning.

The series victory for Salem was its first since June 5th when it completed a 3-1 series total against Frederick.

The Avs continue their nine-game road trip with a series opener at 7:05 Wednesday at Myrtle Beach. Lefty Scott Diamond throws against Salem while Erick Abreu tosses for the Avs.
