
Sharks Shortstop Gary Cates Signed By Phillies

CAMDEN, NJ- The Camden Riversharks announced Thursday the purchase of infielder Gary Cates' contract by the Philadelphia Phillies. Cates becomes the seventh Rivershark to be picked up this season.
Cates, who also turned 27 Thursday, was hitting .286 with 41 runs and 12 stolen bases in 61 games for the Sharks. He spent most of the season leading off and playing shortstop.
Cates was originally drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 1999. He played seven seasons in the Orioles system before being signed by the Chicago Cubs, where he played in 2006 and 2007.
He played under Riversharks manager Joe Ferguson in Single-A for the Orioles and alongside Riversharks Nic Jackson and Richard Lewis and former Rivershark Chris Walker in Double-A for the Cubs.
