SPOKANE, WA - It was a pitching dual Friday night at Avista Stadium, and the Spokane Indians didn’t have enough gas in the tank in the 9th to come away with the win. After scoring one run in the bottom of the 9th and with the bases loaded, the Indians were unable to drive in the tying run and fell 2-1.
Entering the game, Tri-City and Spokane were ranked one and two respectively in the Northwest League in pitching. It wasn’t a surprise then that no runs were scored until the 9th inning when the Dust Devils went up 2-0.
Indians starter Neil Ramirez went six innings, allowing only one hit and fanned seven Dust Devils batters. Right-handed reliever Matt Nevarez worked the final three innings and picked up the loss. Dust Devils starter Juan Nicasio went five innings, allowed two hits and struck out nine.
Outfielder Joey Butler drove in the Indians only run on the night. He finished two for three bumping up his season batting average to .458.
The Indians return to Avista Stadium tomorrow for the second game of the three game homestand against Tri-City. Tomorrow night is Fireworks Night, presented by The Spokesman-Review. The Fireworks show will be extended to help celebrate the 125th Anniversary of The Spokesman-Review. In addition, fans who wear their Hoopfest t-shirt get in to the game for only $5.
