Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV. The Wheeling Nailers today announced that they have once again donated over $100,000 in funds, tickets, merchandise and memorabilia to local non-profit organizations throughout the 2007-08 season. A few of the charitable activities during the 16th Anniversary Season included the 4th Annual "Golden Spike" Golf Scramble, 1st Annual "Pink in the Rink" weekend, 16th Annual Teddy Bear Toss, special jersey auctions, 2nd Annual St. Baldricks Night, as well as the donation of tickets, merchandise and memorabilia.
The Nailers kicked off the 2007-08 Season with the 4th Annual "Golden Spike Association" Charity Golf Scramble. On Wednesday, October 10th, Corporate Sponsors and Fans were paired with Nailers Players for 18 holes of golf, dinner and a day of fun. The Nailers special guests for the event were Hall of Fame Pittsburgh Penguins Pierre Larouche and Craig Patrick along with the Pittsburgh Penguins Eddie Johnson. The Golden Spike Association raises funds to be used to support area youth and non-profit organizations. This year, the Golf Scramble will take place on Thursday, October 9th on the Spiedel Championship course at Oglebay Park.
In November the Nailers held the 1st annual "Pink in the Rink" weekend to benefit local breast cancer patients. The Nailers presented a check for over $9,500 raised from the event to the local organization Ohio Valley Awareness Inc. to use for cancer patients in the Ohio Valley. OV Awareness Inc. uses the funds to provide boxed lunches to chemotherapy patients at the infusion center at The Cancer Center at OVMC. The organization is also purchasing three laptop computers for patients to use while receiving treatment.
The Wheeling Nailers Annual Teddy Bear Toss always brings in great success and many stuffed toys for needy children within the community. The 16th Annual Teddy Bear Toss was held on Saturday, November 24th during a Nailers home game. Over 1,000 teddy bears and stuffed animals were tossed onto the ice, after the Nailers scored their first goal to kick-off the United States Marines annual Toys for Tots campaign. The Teddy Bear Toss along with Toys for Tots provides happiness and hope to disadvantaged children in the Ohio Valley who might otherwise be overlooked during the holiday season. Over the last 16years, the Wheeling Nailers have collected over 20,000 toys and continue to strive for great success with the help of their fans and supporters.
Wheeling Nailers Fans, Sponsors and Team showed their generosity on March 14th, when they helped raise more than $2,000 during the 2nd Annual St. Baldricks Night. St. Baldricks Foundation raises research funds and awareness for childhood cancer by hosting events where people shave their heads for donations and to show support for young cancer patients and their families. During the Nailers game, more than 40 heads were shaved, including Nailers players: Gino Pisellini, John Burton and the entire rookie class.
A small list of the organizations that benefited from the Nailers donations include the Northern Panhandle Head Start, Mountain State Parents Child & Adolescent Network, Wheeling Soup Kitchen, WV Youth Advocate Programs, Special Olympics, Northwood Health Systems, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ohio Valley, Laughlin Memorial Chapel, Children's Home of Wheeling, House of the Carpenter, St. Alphonsus Youth Center and many more.
The Nailers players, as well as the Nailers mascots Spike and WesBanco Buck, made their presence felt in the community, as they made more than 110 appearances at numerous elementary schools, hospitals and community events and more. Spike and WesBanco Buck have continued to make appearances during the off-season, including: Wheeling Cleanup Day, Webark 5k Race, WLSC Spring Field Day, Steenrod School, Broadview School, Ogden Tot Trot, Walk for Autism, and many more to come.
The Nailers extend a special thank you to their fans for helping to support the team's charitable causes.
