Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WILMINGTON, DE - The anemic offense and defensive mistakes continued for Winston-Salem as Wilmington (10-12) claimed a 6-3 victory over the Warthogs on Sunday afternoon at Frawley Stadium. The Warthogs only mustered four hits and two defensive mistakes proved costly as Wilmington swept Winston-Salem (9-10) in the three-game series.
In each game of the series, the Blue Rocks struck first. With two outs and the bases empty in the second inning, Wilmington smacked three straight hits to take a 2-0 lead. Matt Morizio singled and scored on an RBI triple by Josh Johnson. Jarrod Dyson followed with an RBI single that scored Johnson with Wilmington's second run.
The Blue Rocks added a pair of runs in the third inning courtesy of two Warthogs mistakes. Derrick Robinson reached on an error by Warthogs shortstop C.J. Lang. Next, McConnell lined an RBI double down the right field line that scored Robinson. Later in the inning with runners on the corners and one out, David Wood hit a potential inning-ending double play, but Warthogs second baseman Javier Colina lost track of the outs and recorded the lone out at first. Instead of ending the inning with the double play, McConnell scored from third on the RBI ground out to give Wilmington a 4-1 advantage.
The Warthogs put a run on the board in the fourth inning when Paulo Orlando led off the inning with a triple and scored on an RBI groundout by Colina. Wilmington answered immediately off Warthogs reliever Israel Chirino as Joe Dickerson notched a two-run single to give the Blue Rocks a 6-1 lead. The Warthogs struck for two runs in the seventh inning off reliever Greg Holland when Francisco Hernandez belted a two-run double to cut the Warthogs deficit to 6-3.
Wilmington starter Everett Teaford (2-0) was sharp in tossing six innings and limiting the Warthogs to a run on one hit with three strikeouts to earn the win. Warthogs starting pitcher Jacob Rasner (2-1), who entered the game having allowed only runs in 18 innings this season, took the loss after surrendering four runs on five hits in just three innings of work. It was his shortest outing of the year.
The Warthogs continue their six-game road trip with the first of three against Potomac on Monday night. The first pitch at Pfiztner Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
