Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defeat Wolves 68-50

(Wilkes-Barre) Geisinger MVP and Schutt Offensive player of the game Ryan Vena threw nine touchdown passes, five to Wyoming Area grad Rich Musinski as the Pioneers defeated their division rival Manchester Wolves in front of 5128 at the Wachovia Arena in Wilkes-Barre.

The Pioneers defense started early with non stop pressure on Wolves quarterback Brian Jones. After trading scores early, the Pioneers sack brothers went to work with sacks by ADT defensive player of the game Justin Parrish and Isaac Hilton, who would add to his league leading total with 2.5 sacks. After a Connor McCormick missed field goal, the Pioneers struck quickly with a 22 yard pass from Ryan Vena to Tyreak Saviour who made a one handed grab in the corner of the endzone for his second touchdown of the first quarter. Manchester then came back with a second touchdown connection between Brian Jones and Emery Sammons to tie the game at 14 at the end of the first quarter. Sammons would finish the game with 12 catches for 156 yards and three scores.

On the first play of the second half the Ryan Vena and Rich Musinski show began. Vena threw a thirty yard bomb to Musinski for his first of five touchdown catches this one earning him the Cutters Catch of the Game. Musinski would finish with nine catches for 133 yards and five touchdown grabs.

The story of the evening was the Pioneers pass rush that hurried and beat up on Brian Jones who finished 24-41 for 294 yards with two interceptions and five touchdowns. Jones spent the entire second quarter under duress. Sacks by Troy Blackwell and Keith Glover continued the Pioneers onslaught as they were able to take a 40-28 halftime lead. With Vena putting up touchdown passes to JLS Ironman of the Game Larry Kendrick and a long 35 yard bomb to a wide open JJ Outlaw. Kendrick was all over the field. The af2 defending Ironman of the week put up a great all around effort finishing the game with an interception, a fumble recovery, 2 catches for 21 yards and a receiving touchdown, plus four returns for 67 yards.

The Pioneers first drive of the second half stalled and the Wolves were able to capitalize with a Jones touchdown pass to Sammons to pull Manchester to within five at 40-35. From there the Pioneers would step on the accelerator with three Ryan Vena touchdown passes to Rich Musinski around a one yard touchdown run by Jones. After trading rushing touchdowns by Vena and Jones Head Coach Rich Ingold sent out back-up QB Matt Schabert to salt away a Pioneers 68-50 victory.
