Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (13-10) used two three-run innings to earn their fifth series win of the season as they knocked off the Salem Avalanche (11-11) 6-4 in front of 3,817 fans at BB&T Coastal Field. Pelicans starter Kyle Cofield turned in his finest outing of the season, surrendering just three hits in six inning of work.
The series finale coincided with the 3rd Annual Pink Ribbon Night at BB&T Coastal Field. The Pelicans wore custom pink jerseys that were auctioned off in a silent auction from 6:00 p.m. until the completion of the sixth inning. At the end of the game, Pelicans players and coaches lined up on the first base side and took the jerseys off their backs and handed them to the highest bidder. On behalf of the Pelicans, General Manager North Johnson presented a check for $17,500 to Caring In Our Lifetime.
Cofield and Avalanche starter Casey Hudspeth were locked in a scoreless duel until Salem undid the zeros on the scoreboard in the fourth. Jordan Parraz opened up the inning by lining a double to left-center. The Avalanche proceeded to load the bases for Orlando Rosales, who hit a sacrifice fly ball to center field that scored Parraz.
The Pelicans stormed back with vengeance in bottom of the fifth. Phillip Britton led off the inning with a base hit through the left side of the infield. Britton moved up to second a wild pitch and advanced to third on a groundout to third. Then, with the infield positioned near the infield grass, Chad Lundahl smoked a shot to second that went off Greg Buchanan's glove and into right field to score Britton. After Yohan Silva drew a walk to put runners at first and second, Travis Jones crushed a triple to dead center field to vault the Pelicans to a 3-1 lead.
The Pelicans built what turned out to be an insurmountable lead in the bottom of the seventh. Jon Mark Owings led off the inning with a mammoth home run over "Land Shark Landing" off new relief pitcher Bryan Hallberg. Owings' third home run of the season ties him with Brandon Hicks for the team lead. Two batters later, Yohan Silva mashed his first home run of the season over the right center field wall to give the Pelicans a 5-1 lead. After Travis Jones walked, Brandon Hicks hit a missile up the left field line to score Jones from first base.
The Avalanche attempted a comeback in the late innings. After scoring one run in the eighth, they tacked on two more in the ninth off Chris Vines and Kevin Gunderson before running out of steam. Gunderson picked up his Carolina League leading fifth save of the season.
After a day of rest on Sunday, the Pelicans hit the road to start a six game swing away from Myrtle Beach. To start the road-stand the Pelicans will send RHP Ryne Reynoso (1-1, 4.50) to the mound. The Lynchburg Hillcats will counter will LHP Daniel Moskos (2-0, 3.48).
The Pelicans return to the Grand Strand on Monday, May 5th to begin a three-game stand against the Potomac Nationals at BB&T Coastal Field. For tickets and information, call the Pelicans box office at 843-918-6000 or visit us online at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
