HUNTSVILLE, ALA. - Neptune Beach native Mat Gamel was three-for-five at the plate with a homerun while starting pitcher David Welch allowed one run in seven innings leading the Huntsville Stars (15-8) to a 7-2 Saturday afternoon win over the Jacksonville Suns (10-13) in front of 1,875 at Joe Davis Stadium.

Welch (3-1) picked up the win for the Stars with one run on eight hits in seven innings of work. Suns starter Marlon Arias (1-2) fell in the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits in four innings.

The Suns opened the scoring in the first inning against Welch when a Greg Jacobs single scored Ivan DeJesus, Jr. for a 1-0 lead.

Huntsville battled back in the second inning when Cole Gillespie smashed a solo homerun to tie the game 1-1. The Stars added two more runs against Arias in the fourth inning with RBI singles from Freddy Parejo and Alcides Escobar for a 3-1 lead.

On the other side, Welch settled in scattering hits while getting out of trouble with defensive help. With two on and no outs in the fourth inning, Welch induced a fly ball to right field from Jamie Hoffmann. With the runners on the move, LaPorta made the catch that started a triple play, the first for the Stars since 2002. Back-to-back singles started the fifth inning against Welch, but a fly out and a double play ended another threat. A single began the sixth inning, but a double play and ground out ended the inning.

Huntsville added three more runs in the fifth inning against reliever Rick Asadoorian, when pitcher David Welch singled home two runs followed by a Freddy Parejo RBI single for a 6-1 Stars lead. Mat Gamel led off the sixth inning against reliever Edwardo Sierra with his second homerun of the season, opening a 7-1 lead.

Jacksonville's Greg Jacobs hit a solo homerun in the ninth inning against Huntsville reliever Joe Bateman to end the scoring at 7-2.

The Suns and Stars meet Sunday at 3:05 in game four of the series at Joe Davis Stadium. Suns RH Jesus Castillo will face Stars LH Brae Wright. The internet audio is available at jaxsuns.com.
