Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Rancho Cucamonga, CA- The Quakes came out guns a blazin' in the first inning against one of the Rangers top prospects Kasey Kiker. After a lead-off single by Peter Bourjos, he stole second and third base and ultimately scored on an RBI single by Wil Ortiz. After an Ortiz stolen base and a wild pitch got him to third, Drew Toussaint hammered a double off the right field wall to give Rancho a 2-0 lead.

It would stay that way as Quakes starter Amalio Diaz was throwing well after two. But after a lead-off single by Julio Borbon in the 3rd and an RBI single by Grant Gerrard, the Blaze took the lead on a three-run home run by third baseman John Whittleman to lead 4-2. In the fourth, the Blaze added another run on an RBI double by Borbon to lead 5-2.

The Quakes would answer with two runs in the bottom of the fourth on four hits including an RBI single by Anthony Norman and an RBI single by Bourjos to trail by just a run, 5-4. Rancho would tie it in the fifth when Toussaint singled to left to score Ortiz, to even the game at 5-5.

The game would stay tied into the top of ninth after Jared Incinelli went 2.1 innings of spotless relief, Barret Browing came in and struck out Borbon for the second out of the inning, but gave up a single to Jose Vallejo. With Gerrard at the plate, Vallejo stole second and went to third on a wild pitch, and Browning walked Gerrard. Chad Tracy then came up and with two strikes and two outs, singled to left to score Vallejo and give the Blaze a 6-5 lead.

The Quakes went in order in the ninth to fall for the 8th time in nine games. Rancho did steal seven bases today, one shy of the franchise record set in 1995 against High Desert.

Rancho will have Major League rehabbing pitcher John Lackey on the hill tomorrow, with Sean O'Sullivan to follow shortly after, against the Blaze right-hander Tommy Hunter. Game time is scheduled for 7:05pm.
