Rampage use outburst to take 2-1 series lead

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Rampage powered their way to another scoring outburst, lighting the lamp three times in the second period to take a 3-2 victory over the Toronto Marlies Monday night at the AT&T Center in Game 3 and take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Just as they did in Game 2 Friday, the Rampage took over in the middle 20 minutes.

David Spina started the ambush with a power-play rebound in the slot at the 2:45 mark. Matt Murley got an assist, stretching his point streak to six games (five goals, three assists), as did Brendan Bell.

The Rampage took the lead on another power-play marker, this time coming from Jon DiSalvatore.

Kevin Porter corralled the puck behind the Toronto net and threaded the puck to DiSalvatore in the slot for the poke-in. Bell picked up his second helper of the night and has back-to-back two-assist games. He has points in all three games, five total, against the organization he played for from 2003-07.

Bill Thomas capped the eruption with a breakaway flip-in with Travis Roche and Josh Tordjman getting assists.

The Rampage took 16 shots in the period and allowed just four by Toronto. They have outshot Toronto 47-19 during the second period so far in the series, and outscored the Marlies 9-3.

With two more conversions on the power play, the Rampage have scored at a 33.3% clip (5-15) in the series when on the man-advantage against the top-ranked penalty kill unit in the American Hockey League.

The Rampage have also killed off all 16 Toronto power-plays thus far in the series.

Toronto made a game of it in the closing minutes. Defenseman Jay Harrison added his second goal of the series with 64 seconds left to close the gap to 3-2, but the Rampage held on for the win.

Josh Tordjman made a handful of beautiful saves for the Rampage, totaling 32 stoppers in all to take his second-straight win in his first Calder Cup Playoffs. Scott Clemmensen made 37 saves for Toronto.

Brent Aubin scored on a deflection in the opening period for the Marlies.

The win gave the Rampage their first playoff home victory.

Game 4 is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday night at the AT&T Center, with the Rampage looking to take a commanding three games to one lead in the series.
