Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY -- The Montgomery Biscuits (0-1) celebrated their back-to-back Southern League championships before their 2008 opener on Thursday night, and then learned how difficult it would be to win a third.
The Chattanooga Lookouts (1-0), a team the Biscuits have never defeated in a series, took the opener, 4-1.
The game was attended by 7,251, the largest opening day crowd since Riverwalk Stadium opened on April 16, 2004.
Biscuits starter Jake McGee shined in a six-inning start, allowing only three hits and no walks, while striking out seven. He allowed a lone run in the fourth inning when Cody Strait's two-out single scored Michael Griffin. That run knotted the game at 1-1.
The Biscuits had taken the early lead in the first inning after a throwing error by Lookouts shortstop Jose Castro scored Johnny Raburn. They mustered little else against Chattanooga starter Daryl Thompson (1-0), who tossed six innings and at one point retired 13 in a row. Relievers Dan Herrera, Derrik Lutz and Josh Roenicke also threw in a scoreless inning apiece.
The Biscuits' Achilles Heel was its bullpen, and lefty Jino Gonzalez faltered in his Double-A debut. The lefty walked two and allowed three runs, on an RBI triple by B.J. Szymanski in the seventh and a two-run double by Michael Griffin in the eighth.
Before the game, the 15 returning Biscuits players and two coaches received their 2007 championship rings.
Game two of the series is Friday night at 7:05, with Biscuits righty Wade Davis pitted against Chattanooga right-hander James Avery. Alfa will give away replica championship rings to the first 3,000 fans.
