Northwest Arkansas Naturals News Release
PEORIA, AZ - The Northwest Arkansas Naturals played catch-up on Tuesday afternoon, staking the San Antonio Missions to a 6-0 lead and ending up on the losing end of an 8-3 decision. The loss to the San Diego Padres' Double-A club drops the Naturals' spring exhibition record to 6-5.
Blake Johnson started for the Naturals and had a rough outing, allowing six runs in 3 1/3 innings. Johnson walked four and only struck out one. Kyle Crist, who missed most of last season with injury, couldn't shut the floodgates, allowing two more runs in 2 2/3 innings of relief before Aaron Hartsock finished, striking out three in two scoreless frames.
Offensively, the Naturals outhit the Missions 9-8, but couldn't seem to string together enough hits to score many runs. Outfielder Ovandy Suero, the speedster who swiped 75 bases last season for (Advanced-A) Lakeland in the Florida State League (1-for-4) put his tools on display, with two thefts and two runs scored. Geraldo Valentin and Ed Lucas also had two hits a piece. But the Naturals stranded eight runners on the day and failed to hit safely twice in an inning until the eighth, when they were facing an 8-1 deficit.
The Naturals have a total of 13 spring games on their Arizona schedule before breaking camp on March 28th. Wednesday, the Naturals will travel to Peoria again, this time to face the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx, the Seattle Mariners' Double-A affiliate.
