Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Although it may be difficult for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans' K-9 siblings to actually embrace, the team has certainly embraced the addition of Dinger "The Home Run Dog's" younger brother Deuce to the Pelicans staff. The eight-week-old Yellow Labrador Retriever will make his first appearance at the Pelicans' scheduled press conference on Wednesday, March 26th (Tomorrow) at 2 p.m.

Deuce, aptly named as the second eldest brother in the "Home Run Dog" family, and also for the synonymous description of a curve ball, will be making select appearances at Pelicans home games throughout the 2008 season. Always eager to run around and lick a face or two, Deuce will gradually be incorporated into the on-field entertainment aspect of the Pelicans promotional effort. As his training progresses, the 12-pound puppy will become a fixture at Pelicans home games and at Pelicans community appearances all along the Grand Strand for years to come.

"We are overjoyed to welcome Deuce into the fold here at BB&T Coastal Field," said Pelicans' General Manager North Johnson. "Dinger has been, and will continue to be an integral part of the identity of Pelicans baseball, and it is a great feeling to ease his burden a little and permit him to spend more time with his many loyal fans."

Over the next few months, Deuce will be participating in his own form of "Spring Training." Trainer Suzy Laughlan will be putting Deuce through his paces, and making sure he is in game shape during the 2008 season. He'll also be receiving all of his puppy shots, none of which will be administered by Brian McNamee.

The most famous dog on the Grand Strand, Dinger has been a fixture at Pelicans games since 1999. Rivaling Cal Ripken's historic streak, the iron-dog has in fact never missed a Pelicans home game, having attended all 629 Pelicans home games in franchise history. Among his trademark performances are; bringing the baseballs to the home plate umpire and circling the bases following Pelicans victories. He has been recognized with his own bobblehead, been featured on "CNN Headline News", and Contemporary Canine Magazine named him Dog of the Year in both 2003 and 2004, making Dinger the first repeat winner since Lassie won three straight awards from 1955-57.

"Dinger is one of the true pioneers among living mascots in minor league baseball," said Pelicans' President & Managing Partner Chuck Greenberg. "We know that coupling him with his younger brother Deuce will help him maintain the youthful enthusiasm and showdogship that he is famous for."

"We also couldn't be more thrilled to have a namesake to carry on the great tradition of canine mascots on the Grand Strand in the second decade of Pelicans baseball," Greenberg added.

The Labrador Retriever is widely considered the most popular breed of dog (by registered ownership) in the world, and is by a large margin the most popular breed by registration in the United States (since 1991), the United Kingdom, and several other countries. They are exceptionally affable, gentle, intelligent, energetic and good natured, making them both excellent companions and working dogs. With training, the Lab is one of the most dependable, obedient and multi-talented breeds in the world.

The Pelicans open their 2008 season on the road in Wilmington on Friday, April 4th at 7:05 PM. They return to Myrtle Beach to celebrate their home opener on Friday, April 11th at 7:05 PM against the Frederick Keys.
