Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y.) - They were bundled up, wrapped in blankets, sipping coffee or hot chocolate. But as the sun began to rise at Citibank Park on Saturday, the line of fans waiting to purchase individual Ducks tickets for the 2008 season already stretched to the end of the plaza outside the stadium. By the time the ticket window opened at 10:00 a.m., hundreds of loyal Ducks fans were on hand to join in the carnival-like atmosphere and nab some of Long Island's hottest summer tickets. "Today is really the start of the new season," says Ducks general manager Michael Pfaff. "The great support we get from our fans each year and the palpable excitement they bring to this day reminds us why we love what we do here, and how excited we are to kick off the new season."
Clowns, magicians, a facepainter and even the Easter Bunny were at the ballpark to help celebrate the first day of individual ticket sales. The Wiseman and Frank from B-103 emceed the event, asking Ducks, Mets and Yankees trivia to the fans in line with help from Ducks coach and former Mets shortstop Bud Harrelson and Ducks manager and former Yankees pitcher Dave LaPoint. Fans were treated to snacks courtesy of Sabrett, Herr's Chips, Entenmann's, Pepsi and Centerplate, the official food service provider of the Long Island Ducks. Kids played in the Bounce House while their parents signed up for a chance to win a trip to Busch Gardens Williamsburg. Fans mingled with Ducks players and coaches before the ticket window opened with a flourish at 10:00 a.m., singling the official start of "Duck Season."
For the sixth consecutive year, Bay Shore's Dick Van Cott and his son, Ron, were the first fans to purchase single game tickets for the upcoming season. The Van Cotts waited a record 77 hours on line, arriving to the ballpark at 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday to mark Dick's 77th birthday. In recognition of the Van Cotts' devotion to the Ducks, a special presentation was made by Pfaff on behalf of the organization. The Van Cotts received a gift basket which included theater and movie tickets courtesy of B-103, two roundtrip airline tickets courtesy of Southwest Airlines to anywhere Southwest flies, two seats on the annual Faithful Flock road trip, Ducks merchandise, and the opportunity to throw out a first pitch on Fan Appreciation Day during the season. The first kid on line, nine-year-old Ryan, received a Long Island Ducks sweatshirt and a bat autographed by Buddy Harrelson.
