Minnesota Lynx News Release
Minneapolis/St. Paul - The Minnesota Lynx today announced the signing of restricted free-agent center Nakia Sanford of the Washington Mystics to an offer sheet. Per WNBA rules, Washington has five days to match Minnesota's offer.
Sanford, a five-year veteran of the WNBA, has spent her entire career with the Washington Mystics. Sanford's scoring and rebounding numbers have progressively improved since her rookie season in 2003, and she was twice a candidate for the league's Most Improved Player of the Year Award (2004, 2006).
In 2007, Sanford put together her best season in the WNBA. She averaged career-highs in points (11.0) and rebounds (7.1) per game, while starting in 31 of the 34 games that she appeared in. She was ranked second in the WNBA in 2007 in field-goal percentage (53.0) and offensive rebounds (100), fourth in the league in rebounds per game (7.1) and free-throw attempts (194), seventh in the league in free throws made (129), and 15th in the league in blocks (28).
A 1999 graduate of the University of Kansas, Sanford has compiled averages of 6.9 points and 4.7 rebounds in 143 regular-season games in her five-year WNBA career.
Minnesota holds the third overall pick in the first round of the 2008 WNBA Draft. The Lynx acquired the No. 3 pick in the WNBA Draft Lottery that was held on Oct. 23. The 2008 WNBA Draft will be held in April.
The Minnesota Lynx will open their 10th Anniversary Season on May 18, 2008, against the Detroit Shock. Season and group tickets are on sale now for this historic season. Be a part of the celebration by calling 612-673-8400, e-mailing tickets@lynxbasketball.com or visiting www.lynxbasketball.com.
