Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (August 22, 2007) - Burlington Bees pitcher Blake Wood has been named the Midwest League's Pitcher of the Week by Major League Baseball Advanced Media, the official stat service of Minor League Baseball. Wood wins the award for the period of August 13-19 on the strength of his eight no-hit innings on Sunday against Quad Cities.
The dominant performance against the Swing was Wood's only start during the period due to an off-day in the middle of the stretch and a rainout at the end of the prior week that left the pitching rotation jumbled for awhile after a double-header. Wood set a career-high for innings pitched in the outing and turned in arguably the most dominant performance by a Bees' pitcher this season. Wood's next start is scheduled for Friday night against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers when the Bees return home to Community Field to start their final home stand of the regular season.
Wood is the second Bees' pitcher in the last three weeks to earn the MWL Pitcher of the Week Award. Mario Santiago received the award for the week of July 30-August 5 after allowing one run in 13.2 innings over two appearances. Santiago was the first Bees' pitcher to get the award in two years. Prior to Santiago, the last pitcher to get the award was RH Kyle Crist for July 25-31 in 2005.
The Bees are currently halfway through a four-game road series at Cedar Rapids and return to Community Field on Friday. It will be a six-game home stand starting with a Fireworks Friday against Wisconsin sponsored by Fun City, Budweiser, the Hit Music Channel Hot 97 Dot 3, and Your Hometown Station Big County 103.1. The homestand will also include a Dollar Monday sponsored by Miller Lite and the Mix 107.3 and Fan Appreciation Night for the final home game on Wednesday, August 29th on a Kids Eat Free Day sponsored by News Radio 1490 KBUR and 1360 The Ticket.
