Lake Monsters Making A Playoff Push In 2007

Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
Welcome to the All Star Break Edition of the Up from the Depths newsletter. Vermont has been making waves all season and its now paying off with the Lake Monsters sending five participants to Tuesday's game at Dutchess Stadium. Vermont at the break is in 2nd place, 1.5 behind Stedler division leader Oneonta. Vermont as you all know has made great strides from last season, and the credit for that should go to everyone from the coaching staff in Vermont, to the player development department with the Washington Nationals. Does the team hold up to the standards of the Vermont Expos of 1995 and 1996? We shall see, but it should make for a fun ride regardless.
Adrian Alaniz (6-1, 1.74 ERA), Colten Willems (3-0, 2.22 ERA), Glenn Gibson (4-1, 1.79 ERA), Aaron Suess (.329, 3 HR, 21 RBI), and Bill Rheinhart (.294, 3 HR, 37RBI) were the five players named to the team. Seuss went 3-for-3 with a run scored in the All-Star Game, while Rhinehart was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Alaniz started the game for the National League affiliates, tossing a 1-2-3 bottom of the first inning. Gibson allowed two unearned runs on two hits in the fourth inning, while Willems did not pitch.
But it is Garrett Bass is the player to be spotlighted this week. Bass made a strong all-star candidacy this season as he has shown a combination of power (5 homers), speed (13 Stolen Bases), and average (.295). Anyone that believes Bass was snubbed would have a legitimate gripe. Sean Rooney (.287) is also putting up a solid season, while Boomer Whiting was named New York-Penn League Offensive Player of the Week after going 10-for-26 with 2 homers, six RBI and seven stolen bases next week.
The Monsters return home Wednesday August 22nd for a three-game series with the Staten Island Yankees, the team that Vermont is currently in a tie with for the wild card playoff spot with a 30-22 record. The Lake Monsters then host the Brooklyn Cyclones, the NY-Penn League affiliate of the New York Mets, for a three-game series August 25-27.
When Vermont returns home on August 22nd to begin the series with Staten Island, it will begin a stretch that sees the Lake Monsters play 12 of their next 14 games at historic Centennial Field. After Staten Island and Brooklyn, Vermont will host the Oneonta Tigers August 30-31 and the Lowell Spinners, the Boston Red Sox affiliate, September 1-4.
