
Jackhammers Win 5-1

JOLIET, IL-The Joliet JackHammers (1-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead and got a complete-game performance from starting right-handed pitcher Matt Smith (3-4) to beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats (1-1) 5-1 is a crisply-played two hour and twenty-two minute affair before 5,218 fans at Silver Cross Field on Friday night.
The JackHammers got on the board in the second inning against Gary starting pitcher Travis Kerber (1-3). Chad Ehrnsberger (2-4) hit a leadoff single and went to second base when Dennis Blackmon (3-4) singled. Chris Brown (1-3) got on board with a base hit to move Ehrnsberger to third base. A sacrifice fly by Anthony Monegan (0-2) scored Ehrnsberger and gave the JackHammers a 1-0 lead.
JackHammers catcher Dennis Blackmon (3-4) hit his eighth home run of the season in the fourth inning and gave Joliet a 2-0 advantage.
Joliet also pushed across one run in the sixth inning. Tim Hutting (1-3) led off the inning with a walk and went to second base on a single by Ehrnsberger. Kevin Sullivan (0-3) hit into a fielder's choice to score Hutting and give Joliet a 3-0 lead.
The RailCats got on the board with a solo home run from Nate Price (1-4) in the seventh inning. Price hit his fourth home run of the season for Gary, who came within two runs at 3-1.
The JackHammers sealed the victory with two runs in the eighth inning. Hutting singled and scored when Juan Diaz (1-4) hit an RBI double for the JackHammers. Diaz went to third base on an errant throw from the outfield and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sullivan to make it 5-1 in favor of the JackHammers.
Loose Gravel: Friday's complete game was the third of the season for the JackHammers pitching staff. Nick Renault tossed a complete game shutout on June 12 against the Kansas City T-Bones at Silver Cross Field. On June 19, Nate Sevier pitched a complete game, four-hit shutout against the Schaumburg Flyers at ALEXIAN Field.
The JackHammers and RailCats continue their four-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The JackHammers will start RHP Nate Sevier (7-1, 3.46) against Willie Glen (6-0, 3.93) for the RailCats. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:50 on AM 1340 WJOL and online at www.jackhammerbaseball.com.
