PREVIOUS DAY RECAP: The GreenJackets (50-20, 3-1) opened up an eight game home stand with a 4-0 win over the West Virginia Power (48-20, 2-3) on Monday night. In a match up of the two winningest teams in baseball, Augusta recorded its Minor League leading 14th shutout of the season over the top hitting team in the SAL; one day after the GreenJackets suffered their season worst loss. Steven Calicutt (2-3) recorded the win in relief with four shutout innings, allowing three hits, one walk and two strikeouts. The GreenJackets scored all four runs on two outs and Augusta scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning when Matt Weston connected for a two-out double down the right field line scoring Ryan Rohlinger. Juan Trinidad closed out the ninth to preserve the shutout allowing three hits and recording one strikeout. Starting pitcher Dan Griffin yielded only three hits in four plus shutout innings of work for the no decision. Griffin also walked a batter and struck out three.
SHUT DOWN: The GreenJackets recorded their first shutout in the second half of the season last night and their Minor League leading 14th of the season. Augusta is three shutouts away from tying its mark from a year ago of 17 shutouts.
TOP PITCHING STAFF: The GreenJackets have been the top pitching staff in all of Minor League Baseball this year and lowered their staff ERA to 2.56 on the season with last night's shutout.
LEADING IT OFF: Since snapping an 0-for-17 skid, Emmanuel Burriss has hit safely in four straight games and is 10-for-18 (.556) with three runs scored and two RBIs.
ROCKIN' AND ROHLINGER: Ryan Rohlinger has hit in a season high six straight games and is batting .348 (8-for-23) over the streak with seven runs scored, a double, three home runs and five RBIs.
GEORGIA BULLDOG: Bobby Felmy drove in his 47th RBI of the season in last night's win, tying him for the team lead in RBIs with Brett Pill. Felmy and Pill pace the Giants organization with those 47 RBIs.
HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE: Augusta has the best home winning percentage in all of Minor League Baseball with a 30-6 record (.833). Augusta is currently on a season hight 13 game home winning streak with the last home loss coming on May 19.
POWER FAILURE: The GreenJackets have managed to keep the top hitting team in the SAL in line over the first five meetings. Augusta pitching has held the Power to a .242 batting average.
FUTURE STARS: Former GreenJacket pitcher Henry Sosa and shortstop Brian Bocock have been named to the Futures Roster highlighting the top prospects in Minor League Baseball. The two are the only players from the Giants organization picked to take part in the game on July 8 during the MLB All-Star weekend.
PLAYOFF BOUND: Augusta clinched the Southern Division First-Half Title on June 12 assuring themselves a spot in the post season come September.
Tonight's Probables
AUG: LHP Ben Snyder (8-2, 2.22) vs. WVA: RHP Jeremy Jeffress (4-0, 1.14)
WHAT'S ON TAP: Lefty Ben Snyder looks for his fifth straight win tonight in his first matchup against the West Virginia Power. Snyder is coming off win on the road at Charleston and has allowed just two runs over his last 12 innings pitched. Snyder leads the team and is fifth in the SAL with 80 strikeouts while walking just 15. The left-hander is 4-0 with a 2.21 ERA in seven games and five starts at his home park this season. Snyder last suffered a loss on May 25 at Lexington.
Right-hander Jeremy Jeffress makes his sixth start of the season tonight for West Virginia. Jeffress has won three straight starts and four out of his five starts. Jeffress is 2-0 with a 1.98 ERA in three starts on the road this season. Jeffress has allowed just three earned runs in 23.2 innings pitched for the Power, all coming on the road. Jeffress made just four starts for the ARL-Brewers in 2006 and was 0-1 with a 3.18 ERA.
Augusta vs. West Virginia
The two winningest teams in all of baseball hook up for a four game series in Augusta with the West Virginia Power in town. Both Augusta and West Virginia have already clinched a playoff spot with each winning their first half titles in each division. The last time the GreenJackets and Power met was in Charleston, West Virginia and the four game series ended in a series split. Augusta won the first two games by a combined score of 14-8, then dropped the next two, each ending with 4-2 score. Augusta outscored the Power 18-16 in the series and won the second game of the series in 10 innings. The GreenJackets represent the top pitching staff in the SAL while the Power boasts the best hitting team. This is the last regular season meeting between the two clubs.
