State College Spikes News Release

The State College Spikes continued their struggles on Monday evening falling to the Batavia Muckdogs by the count of 6-2. The trip to Batavia was the Spikes' first game against their former manager Mark DeJohn and several former Spikes players who are now with the new St. Louis Cardinals NYPL affiliate in Batavia.

After matching zeroes in the first inning, the Muckdogs broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second. Former Spikes catcher Steve Gonzalez brought home the first run of the game with a two-out RBI double off the wall in right field, to give Batavia an early 1-0 advantage. The Muckdogs tacked on another run in the third that pushed the lead to 2-0 before the Spikes could trim into the deficit in the fourth Bobby Spain started the Spikes rally by reaching on a two-base throwing error and later scored on an RBI single courtesy of Miles Durham that slashed the score to 2-1.

The Muckdogs answered quickly, tacking on a single run in the bottom of the frame to push their lead back to two runs at 3-1. But yet again the Spikes responded, this time with an RBI double from Smelin Perez to bring the Spikes within a run at 3-2. State College wouldn't get any closer however, as the Muckdogs scored twice in the fifth and once more in the sixth to push their advantage to 6-2, and that is how the game would end.

Spikes starter Moises Robles (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing five runs on six hits over his four innings of work. The Spikes bullpen though was a positive as Christian Castorri and Taylor Cameron combined to allow only one run on one hit through the final four innings of the game.

State College will look to bounce back tomorrow evening when they take on the Muckdogs in the middle game of three at Dwyer Stadium. LHP Tony Watson, who pitched five innings of no-hit baseball in his season debut, will toe the rubber for the State College. The Spikes will head to Jamestown for three with the Jammers after wrapping up the series with Batavia, before returning to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Sunday, July 1st. Great tickets are still available for the Spikes next home stand, and they can be purchased over the phone by calling 877-99-SPIKES, logging on to StateCollegeSpikes.com or by visiting Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
