Brownlie Shuts Down Road Warriors

NEWARK, NJ - June 19, 2007 - Newark Bears starter Bobby Brownlie (4-3) pitched six-plus scoreless innings striking out a season high ten batters and second baseman Javier Colina hit his team leading ninth home run of the season as the Bears defeated the Road Warriors 7-0 Tuesday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. With the win, the Bears have earned their sixth shutout of the season, and have won six of their last eight games to improve their record to 23-21.

After loading the bases in the bottom of the first inning when center-fielder Keith Reed reached on an error, shortstop Donaldo Mendez singled, and Colina walked, right-fielder Jose Herrera hit a sacrifice-fly scoring Reed to give the Bears an early 1-0 lead.

Newark added to the lead in the bottom of the third inning when Colina belted a 2-1 pitch over the leftfield wall to give the Bears a 2-0 advantage, and again in the bottom of the eighth inning when left-fielder Jack Headley and catcher John Pachot each hit RBI singles with the bases loaded, followed by a bases clearing three-run double by Reed putting the Bears ahead 7-0.

Colina and Pachot each finished the game with two hits, one run scored, and one RBI, while Reed went 1-for-5 extending his hitting streak to 13 games, and third baseman Corey Smith went 1-for-4 extending his hitting streak to seven games.

Road Warriors starter Damien Myers (0-4) took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in 6.2 innings pitched. Bears reliever Travis Phelps earned his first save of the season pitching three scoreless innings striking out two.

The Bears and Road Warriors will complete the three game series with the final game Wednesday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Carlos Mirabal (3-2) will make the start for the Bears against Cody Harkcom (0-4) for the Road Warriors. Gates open at 6:05 PM for Wear it! Win it! Wednesdays! All fans who wear Bears apparel to the box office will receive $1 off their box seat. If the Bears win, everyone may redeem their ticket stub for another 2007 Bears home game.
