Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, Pa - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, announced LHP Justin Mattison is scheduled to join The Wild Things' line up for the 2007 season.

Mattison is a converted outfielder who was selected by the Wild Things with the 8th overall pick in the 2006 Frontier League draft. Following the draft, his contract was sold to the San Diego Padres where he was assigned to Eugene (OR) of the Northwest League. With Eugene, he was 3-1 with a 3.29 ERA, five saves, and 22 strikeouts over 27.1 innings pitched in 26 appearances. He placed 5th in the Northwest League with 19 Rolaids relief points.

"Justin is someone we saw last year at the League Tryout Camp and we were fortunate enough to be able to draft him at the 8th pick," said Ross Vecchio, general manager of the Wild Things. "He has a live arm and is a competitor. He will complement our bullpen very well this season"

Mattison was originally selected as an outfielder by the Florida Marlins in the 35th round of the 2003 June Draft from Virginia Commonwealth University. He made his professional debut that season at Jamestown of the New York Penn League where he batted .211 with seven doubles, two triples, one home run, and nine RBI. He was converted to pitcher the next season where he made 11 relief appearances with a 1-0 record and two saves for the Gulf Coast Marlins.

He finished 10th in the Colonial Athletic Conference in batting for VCU in 2003 during his senior season when he chalked up a .351 batting average with 17 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 40 RBI, and eight stolen bases in 57 games.

The Wild Things will open their sixth season in the Frontier League on May 23rd. The day has been declared Wild Things Wednesday by the county of Washington. Everyone is asked to celebrate the day by wearing Wild Things' colors and logo-ware. The Wild Things have advanced to post-season action an unprecedented five consecutive years.
