SAINT JOHN, April 16, 2007 - The Saint John Sea Dogs have announced the appointment of Jim Midgley as assistant coach.
Midgley, 29, has been an assistant coach with the Acadia Axemen men's hockey team in Wolfville, N.S. for the past four years. The Townsend, Ontario native succeeds Dwayne Blais.
Jacques Beaulieu, general manager and head coach of the Sea Dogs, said Midgley brings substantial hockey experience to the table from the university ranks. The Acadia Axemen won the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) championship in 2005-2006.
"He has been part of a very successful program and wants to bring that type of success to our organization," said Beaulieu. "Jim is also very passionate about the game of hockey."
In addition to serving as a coach with the Axemen since 2003, Midgley has for the past five years been extensively involved with Hockey Nova Scotia's Program of Excellence. He was head coach of the Nova Scotia under-16 team that won silver at the Atlantic Challenge Cup in Dieppe this past October and was an assistant coach with the provincial under-15 team that won gold at the same tournament in 2005. Midgley has also taught at numerous hockey schools.
As a player, Midgley began his major junior career with the North Bay Centennials of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in 1995-1996, finishing with the Belleville Bulls three years later. He served as captain with North Bay and was an assistant in Belleville.
Midgley joined the Saint Mary's Huskies 1998 where over four seasons he scored 152 points in 107 games (52 goals, 100 assists). As a first-year player with the Huskies, he was named the AUS rookie of the year, was Saint Mary's male rookie of the year, was selected to the AUS all-star game and was named to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) all-Canadian rookie team. Midgley was a first league all-star and was named a CIS All-Canadian in 1999.
He served as captain in his last two seasons with the Huskies, including 2001-2002 when Saint Mary's won the AUS championship. His playing career ended in 2002-2003 with the Fort Worth (Texas) Brahmas of the Central Hockey League.
As an assistant with the Sea Dogs, Midgley will concentrate on working with the Sea Dogs defense corps. He will also share player conditioning responsibilities.
