SOUTHAVEN --- Saturday night as the Memphis RiverKings defeated the Oklahoma City Blazers 4 to 3, the team highlighted United Cerebral Palsy of the Mid-South as the night's featured non-profit.

Cerebral Palsy is a term used to describe a group of chronic conditions affecting body movement and muscle coordination caused by brain damage, "cerebral" referring to the brain and "palsy" referring to muscle weakness. United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) is a nationwide organization consisting of member affiliates.

Over 100 independent, state and local United Cerebral Palsy affiliates help lead the way in serving more than 170,000 children and adults with disabilities, and their families.

United Cerebral Palsy advocates for the independence, productivity, and full citizenship of people with disabilities, and works to positively affect the quality of life for persons with Cerebral Palsy and others with severe disabilities and multiple service needs, and their families.

"The night went really well", said Audrey Kerr, representative of United Cerebral Palsy Mid-South. "It was a great opportunity for us to get our message and information out to the public."

This was the first time that United Cerebral Palsy participated as the RiverKings' featured non-profit. However, the two organizations have worked together before. The RiverKings attended United Cerebral Palsy's Elvis 5K run this past August. Money raised by this event went to benefit the programs of UCP Mid South.

United Cerebral Palsy of the Mid-South was able to promote their cause and mission to the RiverKings sellout crowd of over 8,000 fans Saturday. "We are always looking to get out the message of our children's programs," Kerr said. "We stress the children's programs we have because people get very excited when they realize all the wonderful children's programs we have in place in the area."

"To help raise money for our children's programs we are currently contacting businesses interested in participating with our Casual Day. Businesses within the Memphis area would allow their employees to wear causal clothing to work on May 11th, 2007 for a donation to United Cerebral Palsy," Kerr explained. "The employees receive a t-shirt and a teddy bear, while our children's programs receive the incoming donations."

United Cerebral Palsy of the Mid-South is committed to creating life without limits for people with disabilities. To help aid this program and its wonderful causes visit www.ucpmemphis.org to find out what more you can do.
