Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries have hired Scott Lydy as the team's hitting coach for the 2007 season. Lydy spent five seasons in the Oakland A's organization culminating with 41 games at the Major League level in 1993. In his 13 year playing career, the Arizona native played under managers Tony La Russa, Japanese Home Run King Sadaharu Oh, Bob Boone, and Tony Pena.
"During his career, Scott was a proven hitter not only in the United States, but also during his time playing in Japan, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic" noted Canaries Manager Steve Shirley. "Looking at what he accomplished with his bat over the extended time period that he accomplished it, I quickly saw that he is highly-qualified to work with a wide range of hitters."
As the hitting coach for the Canaries, Lydy will work with hitters ranging from veterans who have played in the Major Leagues to rookies in their first year of professional baseball. In 2006, the Canaries were last in the American Association with a .270 team batting average.
"When I was a kid we always had a batting cage in our back yard, so hitting is second nature to me," said Lydy. "I'm excited to get back into the game that has been such a prominent part of my life, and to do so working with a well-respected manager in a beautiful baseball stadium."
Scott is a graduate of South Mountain Community College in Phoenix, Arizona, where he visits in his free time to assist the coaching staff in working with hitters. Lydy was the 56th overall pick in the 1989 MLB Entry Draft. He was drafted ahead of future Rookie of the Year winners Tim Salmon (69), Jeff Bagwell (109), and Marty Cordova (267)
Bird Seeds: Canaries season ticket holder Pam Buckley won the team's Holiday Dessert Baking Contest at Tuesday Night's Holiday Party. ... While coming up through the A's farm system, Scott Lydy was roommates with current New York Yankees slugger Jason Giambi.
