Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
Williamsport Crosscutters and the Philadelphia Phillies officials joined together at a Tuesday luncheon at the Genetti hotel to announce a new two-year Player Development Contract between the two organizations.
The deal marks the end of the Cutters affiliation with the Pittsburgh Pirates that started in 1999 and lasted for eight seasons. The Pirates announced Monday that they had signed a Player Development Contract with the State College Spikes. The Phillies had spent the past 19 seasons in Batavia, N.Y.
"This is a great day for the Williamsport Crosscutters," stated club President Paul Velte. "We had a great relationship with the Pittsburgh Pirates and we wish them great success in State College. They gave us four playoff teams in eight years and two New York-Penn League titles, we couldn't ask for much more than that. But at the same time, the opportunity to partner with the Philadelphia Phillies was something we could not pass up. We have always said, internally, that the only thing better than being with the Pirates is if we could somehow get the Phillies here and today is the day."
Representing the Phillies for the announcement was Asst. General Manager Mike Arbuckle and the Phils Director of Minor Leagues Steve Noworyta. "We are very excited about our new partnership with the Williamsport Crosscutters," said Arbuckle. The Phillies have a great fan base in this area." Noworyta added, "Moving our affiliation closer to Philadelphia has many player development advantages for us."
The Philadelphia-Williamsport affiliation carries with it some history. The two cities were also baseball partners from 1933-1942, 1953 and 1958-1962. In those seasons the teams compiled a record of 1,156-1,058 (.522) winning championships in 1934 and 1960.
Crosscutters 2007 season tickets are now on sale and can be reserved by calling (570) 326-3389. Additional information is available by logging on to the Cutters website at www.crosscutters.com.
