Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA - Falconi Field will play host to a Bull Riding Championship Saturday [September 30]. This is no bull.....30 bovines, along with 30 bull riders, will make their way to the Washington County Diamond to participate in a Bull Riding Championship. The main event [bull riding] will be preceded by a number of other activities, including a petting zoo, pony rides, mechanical bull riding, mutton bustin' and much more!
"We had to turn some bull riders away," said Matt DeJohn, proprietor of Buckin' B, the producer of the show. "We do have Blaine Whipp and Bronson Butcher coming; they're both World Champions in the sport of bull riding. We also have the 2004 and 2005 rookies of the year, Chance Riley and Brian Conzett. People will see riders and bulls they've seen on TV."
Bull riding is a year-round sport that is gaining a lot of momentum throughout the United States. "According to the articles we've read, bull riding is similar to NASCAR in terms of its growing popularity," said John Swiatek, managing partner of the Washington Wild Things and the Riverhounds FC, who both call Falconi Field home. "We're looking forward to this event. It adds yet another element to what we are able to do at the facility."
The bull riders, who are looking to gain points as the 2006 season winds down, range in age from 20 to 40 years old. "The points they earn in this show will count toward the World Finals that will be held in Nashville in January," added DeJohn.
"A lot of people are asking if these are real bulls and they're amazed when we say yes," laughed Swiatek. "They're even more amazed when they learn that the baseball diamond will be transformed into a rodeo arena! There's no doubt, that we're probably one of the first professional baseball fields ever to be used for bull riding. It will be a lot of work to transform the field, but our staff is quite capable, and we're convinced that Falconi Field is the perfect venue for this event."
Tickets for the event are available at the Falconi Field Box Office and on line at www.washingtonwildthings.com or at www.riverhounds.com. Gates open at 4:00 p.m.
