Whitecaps Pummel Lansing in Game One

LANSING - A night after eliminating the Fort Wayne Wizards, the West Michigan Whitecaps traveled to Oldsmobile Park and dominated the Lansing Lugnuts in the series opener 9-3 Saturday evening. The Whitecaps lead the best-of-3 series 1-0.

West Michigan took command of the game early by plating three runs in the second frame. Will Rhymes reached on an error by Jacob Butler to put a runner at first. Rhymes then swiped second and scored on a Pedro Cotto single to make it 1-0. Joel Roa then stepped up later in the inning and cracked a two-run homer to extend the lead to 3-0. All of the runs were unearned to Lansing starter Casey McKenzie.

Mike Hollimon opened the lead for the Whitecaps with a solo homer to right to make it 4-0. Cameron Maybin then doubled to left-center field and later scored on a Will Rhymes sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-0.

The Lugnuts first run came in the bottom of the sixth when Brian Pettway scored from second on an error by Rhymes to cut the lead to 5-1.

The Whitecaps added two more runs in the seventh and eighth to put the game away. Michael Hernandez's two-run single in the seventh gave the Whitecaps a 7-1 lead. Maybin's bases loaded double to right plated two more runs to extend the advantage to 9-1.

Brian Bormaster's two-run double in the eighth added the final two runs for Lansing.

Erik Averill got the win for West Michigan, throwing 5 2/3 innings and allowing one unearned run on four hits.

McKenzie took the loss for the Lugnuts, surrendering five runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 frames.

Lansing will look to tie the series in game two on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark. Sean Stidfole will throw for the Lugnuts, while Matt O'Brien will take the hill for the Whitecaps. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
