Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - With training camp set to open in one month, the Bakersfield Condors continue to build their roster with familiar faces from last year's squad. The latest additions are veteran forward Joel Irving and third-year defenseman Tyler Scott, who were both announced today by Head Coach Marty Raymond.
Irving and Scott are the 18th and 19th players signed for the 2006-07 season and the 10th and 11th players returning from last season. (Scott Balan, Scott Borders, Mike Hofstrand, Andrew Ianiero, Reagan Leslie, Josh Liebenow, Kevin St. Jacques, Kevin Truelson and Sean Venedam have also re-signed from last year.)
The 30-year-old Irving, who was acquired from the South Carolina Stingrays in late November, netted seven game-winning goals during the regular season last year, tops on the Condors and tied for second in the ECHL. Overall, he notched 44 points (15g, 29a) and 88 penalty minutes in 64 games, split between Bakersfield and South Carolina.
Irving also posted four points (1g, 3a) and 46 penalty minutes in 12 postseason games for the Condors. His playoff goal came in Game 7 of the Pacific Division Semifinals against the Long Beach Ice Dogs, clinching Bakersfield's first-ever postseason series win.
The 6-foot-4-inch, 225-pounder from Lumsden, Saskatchewan is entering his ninth professional year and has more than 500 professional games under his belt. Irving, who was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the sixth round of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, was a member of South Carolina's Kelly Cup Championship team in 2000-01.
"Joel is obviously a proven player in this league and I'm very happy to have him back with us this season," Raymond said. "He showed us last year his abilities to perform in the clutch and having his presence back in the locker room with all the new young players coming in will be an added bonus."
Scott also enters his second season in Condorstown after notching 10 points (3g, 7a) and 20 penalty minutes, splitting time with Bakersfield and the Dayton Bombers. The 26-year-old began the season in Dayton before being traded to the Pensacola Ice Pilots, where he didn't report. He was then dealt to Bakersfield in mid-February. In 14 playoff games with the Condors, he recorded three points (2g, 1a) and 16 penalty minutes.
The 6-foot, 200-pounder from Rockville, Md. began his pro career in 2004-05, splitting time with Dayton and the Central Hockey League's Tulsa Oilers. Scott spent the previous three years playing collegiately at the University of New Hampshire. He was a ninth round selection of the New York Islanders in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
"We're very happy to have Tyler back with us as well," Raymond said. "He's a great all-around defenseman who is very consistent. He's got great character and is well-liked by his teammates."
The Condors open their 2006-07 regular season at Rabobank Arena Friday, Oct. 20 against the Stockton Thunder. For more information or to reserve season tickets, mini-plans and book group outings contact the Condors office at 324-PUCK (7825). Season ticket packages start as low as $30
