Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ (September 6, 2006) - The Trenton Titans announced on Wednesday that they have agreed to terms with goaltender Joel Martin for the 2006-07 season. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Martin enters his third year of pro hockey after enjoying the most successful season ever by Kalamazoo Wings goalie. The native of Three Hills, Alberta was named the United Hockey League's 2005-06 Southern Sports Supply Best Goaltender as he led all UHL netminders with a 2.20 goals against average and a .921 save percentage. Martin went 36-12-4 in 52 appearances ranking second among UHL goalies in wins, while also setting a Kalamazoo team record for wins in a season. He also added an entry into the UHL's record book in 2005-06 setting the mark for shutouts in a season with nine.
The accolades continued last year for the 23-year old as Martin backstopped the K-Wings to their first ever Colonial Cup Championship, was named to the UHL All-Rookie Team and the UHL All-Star First Team and also selected to the starting lineup at the 2006 UHL All-Star Classic.
Though a rookie last season by UHL standards, Martin made his professional debut in 2003-04 with the Odessa Jackalopes of the Central Hockey League and the ECHL's Columbus Cottonmouths. He went on to join Kalamazoo in 2004-05 registering a 17-8-1 record with a 2.20 GAA and a .927 save percentage.
Prior to beginning his pro career, Martin played three seasons of junior hockey in the Western Hockey League compiling a 46-50-9 record. Martin will be in attendance at the Norfolk Admirals' (AHL) training camp later this month.
Martin becomes the fifteenth player to sign with the Titans for the 2006-07 season, including forwards Scott Bertoli, Alex Goupil, Les Haggett, Jim Henkel, Greg Johnson, Brian McConnell, Scott Selig, Scott Sheppard, Rob Sich and Peter Zingoni and defensemen Chris Cava, Jerramie Domish, Peter Tormey and Brian Yandle.
