Long Island Ducks News Release

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 30, 2006) - Heading into Wednesday's contest with Newark, Pat Ahearne was a win shy of tying the franchise's single season wins record. After eighth shutout frames, the lanky righty picked up his 11th victory of the season, tying Lance Davis' record-setting total of 2005.

Through eight innings of work, Ahearne (11-3) allowed just five hits, with just three batters moving into scoring position while registering 15 groundouts. Kevin Tolar closed the door on the 1-0 Ducks victory with a scoreless ninth inning. With his scoreless inning, the former Red Sox picked up his 13th save of the season in as many tries. Carlos Mirabal (4-4) absorbed the loss after allowing a lone run on five hits in a complete-game effort.

Juan Gonzalez gave the pitching staff all the run support that they would need with an RBI double to center in the bottom of the fourth that plated Kevin Haverbusch from first.

On Thursday, the Ducks and Bears will play a doubleheader starting at 6:05 p.m. Lefty Pete Hartmann (7-5) will take the hill against Newark's David Shepard (5-12) in the opening game. The second contest of the twin bill will take place approximately 20-25 minutes after the conclusion of game one with David Manning making his Atlantic League debut against the Bears Pat Daneker (4-7).
