Mirabal tosses complete game, Bears lose 1-0

NEWARK, NJ - August 30, 2006 - Newark Bears starting pitcher Carlos Mirabal (4-4) threw a complete game (eight innings) allowing one run on five hits striking out four, however took the loss against the Long Island Ducks 1-0 at Citibank Park.

The only run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI double to left center field by designated hitter Juan Gonzalez scoring left-fielder Kevin Haverbush. Haverbush reached base on a fielder's choice after shortstop Carlos Hernandez was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Gonzalez went 1-for-3 with the RBI double, and Haverbush finished 1-for-4 with double and a run scored.

For the Bears designated hitter Victor Rodriguez, first baseman Alexis Hernandez, left-fielder Al Benjamin, catcher Victor Valencia, and center-fielder Nick Steppe each one single for the Bears five hits.

Ducks starter Pat Ahearne (11-3) pitched eight scoreless innings allowing five hits while striking out three, and Kevin Tolar picked up his 13th save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.

The Bears and Ducks will complete the three-game series Thursday evening with a doubleheader beginning at 6:05pm. For Newark, Pat Daneker (4-7) will take the mound for game one, and David Shepard (5-12) will start game two.
