Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Chih-Hsien Chiang capped off a four-run third inning with a three-run homer and the Lowell Spinners held on for a 5-3 New York-Penn League victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters Tuesday night at historic Centennial Field.
Vermont starter Terrence Engles tossed two scoreless innings on just 14 pitches, but the Spinners used four straight hits to start the third to score their four runs. Luis Exposito and Ryan Kalish had back-to-back singles to leadoff the inning and Kristopher Negron plated the first run of the game with an RBI single to left. Chiang followed with the three-run homer over both sets of billboards in rightfield for a 4-0 lead.
The Lake Monsters got a run back in the bottom of the third as Ricky Caputo led off with a double, moved to third on a one-out Michael Daniel single and scored when the throw home on the single got past catcher Exposito.
The game stayed 4-1 until the seventh when Caputo led off that inning with a triple and scored on a Jonathan Martinez RBI groundout. The Spinners got that run back in the eighth off reliever Dan Pfau on a walk and RBI double from Reid Engel for a 5-2 lead.
Vermont got the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning as the Lake Monsters scored a run on back-to-back two-out doubles from Daniel and Justin Maxwell, but Francisco Guzman grounded out to second to end the game.
Yulkin German (6-1) picked up the win in relief of starter Travis Beasley, who allowed just an unearned run on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts over 4.2 innings. German allowed one run over 2.1 innings for the victory, while Jordan Craft tossed two innings for his first save. Engles (1-8) allowed four runs on six hits over three inings for the loss.
Chiang was 2-for-5 with the three-run homer, his first since joining the Spinners last weekend from the Gulf Coast League. Paul Smyth was 2-for-4 with one run and one double for Lowell (33-33), which got back to the .500 mark with its third straight win.
Daniel was 4-for-5 with one run and two doubles to raise his batting average to .319 for the season, while Caputo was 2-for-3 with two runs, a double and triple. Vermont had nine hits in the game, including five doubles and a triple.
Vermont (21-45), which has now lost four straight games overall and 10 of its last 11 home games, will open a three-game series against the Hudson Valley Renegades at Centennial on Wednesday. Glenn Gibson, a sixth-round pick of Washington in the 2006 draft, will make his professional debut for the Lake Monsters on Wednesday.
