Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Tucson, AZ - The Sidewinders swept their second double header in two days over the Tacoma Rainiers and reduced their magic number to reach the playoffs to four. LF Scott Hairston homered twice and RHP Dustin Nippert pitched a complete game in Tucsoon's 11-2 victory in game one. Game two saw a much more subdued performance form the Sidewinders, who won the game by a final of 4-2.

CF Adam Jones led the game off with a home run to give Tacoma a quick 1-0 lead. Then in the second inning, 2B Michael Garciaparra hit a two out double and came home on a DH Rob Johnson single.

The Sidewinders busted the game open by sending eleven men to the plate and scoring seven runs. CF Jon Weber led off with a home run to left-center, promptly followed by a LF Scott Hairston homer to left to tie the game 2-2. 1B Chris Carter then singled and scored on a C Miguel Montero home run that bounced off the foul pole in right field to put Tucson up 4-2. 3B Kenny Perez walked and moved to third on a RF Robby Hammock single. 2B Matt Erickson then singled to score Perez and put runners at the corners again. At that point, RHP Francisco Cruceta was pulled from the game. DH Juan Brito doubled in two more to run the score up to 7-2.

The score stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth when the Sidewinders tacked on four more runs. Brito walked and Weber singled to put two runners on for Hairston, who cranked his second homer of the night, this time to center field. Three straight singles by Carter, Montero and Perez scored Tucson's eleventh run.

Tacoma's Adam Jones scored first in the second game as well when he led off the top of the fourth with a double and came around to score on a 3B Greg Dobbs single.

The Sidewinders tied the game up in the fifth when CF Donnie Sadler singled and scored from first on a SS Alberto Callaspo double.

Tucson brought home three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead, 4-1. Hairston led off with a double and moved to third on a Carter fly out. Hairston scored on a slow grounder back to the mound hit by RF Robby Hammock. Perez reached on an error and Brito walked to put runners on first and second for Weber, who doubled in both runners to make the score 4-1.

Tacoma added a run in the top of the seventh on a 2B Ismael Castro solo shot to left. LHP Randy Choate came on with two outs to try and nail down the save. The first batter he faced, SS Oswaldo Navarro, reached on an error to load the bases. Dobbs then singled to second to score a run and bring Tacoma within one run at 4-3. Choate managed the final out with the bases loaded to seal the win for Tucson.
