Each team also utilized its bench to its fullest extent as every Riverhounds and all but one Crew player saw action.

After a constant back and forth battle, the Crew struck first as midfielder Ricardo Virtuoso set up defender Ivan Becerra in the 41st minute to give Columbus the 1-0 lead late in the first half. The Riverhounds fought hard to tie up the score before the half launching several offensive attacks.
