Riverhounds Sod Field for Match vs. Crew
August 8, 2006 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC News Release
When the Riverhounds FC charge onto Falconi Field tonight for an exhibition against the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer both teams will be playing on a "new field."
In less than 10 hours Falconi Field staff installed nearly 12,000 square feet of one-inch thick Kentucky Bluegrass over the clay of the baseball diamond. The grass was installed to create a more traditional soccer field for the second match-up between the MLS club and the Riverhounds. Last August, the Crew and Riverhounds battled to a 0-0 tie in front of a nearly 3,200 soccer fans at Falconi Field.
"The grounds crew from VicNor Farms got here at 8 a.m. and started laying the sod down. As we expected because of the curvature of the ground a lot of the sod had to be trimmed," said Falconi Field's Director of Stadium Operations, Steve Zavacky. "It took a little bit longer than we thought but everything will be ready by the 7:05 p.m. kickoff."
Tomorrow the sod will be removed and the HOUNDS® will donate the rolls of grass to an area youth soccer organization.
After a morning workout the Crew (4-9-8) left Columbus for Washington, PA at 1 p.m. and will take on a Riverhounds club that still factors in the United Soccer Leagues playoff picture. At 7-6-6 the 'Hounds-who have one regular season match left at Cincinnati-remain tied for fourth in the USL Second Division standings with the New Hampshire Phantoms. The top four teams in the standings when the regular season concludes on August 13 qualify for the postseason.
