The 25-year-old closer and native of San Juan in the Dominican Republic was a non-drafted free agent signing by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Feb 6, 2001. Ramirez spent three seasons in the Angels farm system playing for Provo, Rancho Cucamonga, and Cedar Rapids. Ramirez was released from the Angels on March 31, 2004.
Ramirez played his 2005 campaign with the Pensacola Pelicans of the now defunct Central League. In Pensacola, Ramirez posted a 2-2 record and 1.45 ERA in 43 relief appearances. In leading the Pelicans to the Central League playoffs, Ramirez gave up only 37 hits, struck-out 93 batters and walked only 15. His strikeout to walk ratio was an impressive 6.2:1. For every nine innings pitched he struck-out 13.5 batters and Central League hitters hit a measly .170 against him this season. After the 2005 season with the Pelicans, Ramirez's contract was purchased by the Angels and he made one appearance for the AAA Salt Lake City Stingers.
"It is a shame that we have to lose such a great reliever like Edwar," Coyote Field Manager Vince Moore said. "We are extremely excited that he's going to affiliated ball. We wish him the very best with the Yankees.
With the Coyotes in 2006 Ramirez has been the most dominant reliever in the entire United League. Ramirez is 1-1 with a league high 25 relief appearances. Ramirez allowed only 14 this walking 10 and striking out 46. His strikeouts per nine inning average was an astounding 15.94 and was among the United League leaders in strikeouts despite pitching half the innings of some starters. Ramirez also was astounding in front of the home town fans.
The Edinburg Coyotes are part of United League Baseball, an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas and Louisiana. The United League is in its inaugural season with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Laredo, Harlingen, and San Angelo, Texas; and Alexandria, Louisiana. The ULB will play a 90-game schedule between May and August 2006.
